Children with Special Needs

Children in West Africa are showing increasing rates of physical and neuro-psychological conditions that affect their ability thrive and learn.

The goal of our "Meeting Special Needs" project is to help establish in Cote d’Ivoire a system of prevention, intervention and inclusion for individuals with disabilities of any kind as well systems for early identification of children at risk for developmental delays.  Our efforts are in accordance with the international principles of human rights.
Under a grant from DePaul University, we are conducting a series of presentations on the benefits of inclusion of children with special needs in society and the importance of early intervention to maximize their development and opportunities.  Subjects addressed include the use of screening instruments to aid in identifying children at risk, the recognition of and intervention for autism, and community awareness and inclusion of persons with special needs.   Another partner, The Ivorian Institute of National Public Health, provides the location and logistical support required to bring in learners from schools, health care facilities and families around the country to participate in our workshops.
